One Poll research of 2,000 UK adults

Four out of five UK households want to reduce their single use plastic waste and are actively taking steps to cut their consumption, according to new research carried out by One Poll in March 2021.

Research commissioned by sustainable cleaning brand Toucan Eco into the habits of 2,000 British households highlighted households’ desire to be more eco-friendly, with just 2% of respondents saying they didn’t consider it important to reduce plastic waste.

While sustainability remains front of mind for many consumers, the pandemic has also led households to clean more frequently, with 67% saying they felt it was now more important to deep clean their home and to clean more regularly.

The increase in cleaning frequency has prompted homeowners to consider the environmental impact of their household cleaning routines and products they use. In fact, four out of five households (82%) revealed they were actively trying to reduce their impact.

Pandemic affects home cleaning

The pandemic has made the general public more aware of the importance of cleaning in the home, but this can be at odds with a consumer desire to be more ecologically friendly. Almost one in four (24%) said that having people living and working at home during lockdown had also contributed to the need to clean more often.

Some of the ways in which consumers are trying to limit the environmental impact of their cleaning include:

  • Buying products with recyclable packaging (45%)
  • Choosing biodegradable options (28%)
  • Using less water (30%)
  • Choosing products with natural ingredients (26%)

The increase in cleaning during the pandemic has unfortunately led to an increase of single-use plastic cleaning bottles; more non-degradable wipes going to landfill and chemical cleaning solutions that impact our waterways. However, there are products on the market that offer a more sustainable alternative.

Consumers are also becoming increasingly aware of the health implications of chemical cleaning products. In fact, one in 10 said that it was the most important consideration when purchasing a new cleaning product. A further 10% said that chemical-free products were most important.

Sustainability is a focus for lots of us and it’s clear to see that people are consciously trying to do their bit for the environment. This shouldn’t mean compromising on results and we’re encouraged to see that more than seven in 10 believe that cleaning products can be both effective and eco-friendly at the same time.

About Toucan Eco eSpray

Toucan Eco eSpray is a new on-demand sustainable cleaning product that uses nothing more than tap water, salt and an electrical current to create a highly effective disinfectant cleaner which has undergone stringent testing to be certified to EN 14476, EN 16777, EN 1276 and EN 13697 to kill 99.99% of germs, including coronavirus.

The solution is electrochemically activated by applying a small, electrical current which recombines the naturally occurring elements of hydrogen, oxygen and chlorine into hypochlorous acid – an effective disinfectant, and sodium hypochlorite, a mild pH level cleaning agent that is hypoallergenic, odour-free and safe to use around humans and animals.

The Toucan Eco unit itself is made of recyclable polycarbonate and is designed for use over many years — eliminating the need for consumers to buy multiple single-use plastic bottles of various household cleaners.

The eSpray can make 350ml of solution in less than five minutes. Once the solution is activated it can be used for up to a week on all surfaces, from floors to worktops, kitchen appliances, bathrooms and high frequency touch points like door handles. It can also be sprayed onto fabrics to neutralise odours and is safe to use on animals’ dirty paws and coats.

The spray can be wiped away with reusable cloths such as microfibre, removing the requirement for disposable wipes or single-use cloths which will significantly reduce household expenditure and single-use plastic waste. After use, any surplus solution simply reverts back to salt water and can be disposed of safely into any sink or drain.

The Toucan Eco eSpray  comes with a 12-month warranty from date of purchase, is priced at £59.99 and available to buy at www.toucaneco.co.uk/product/toucan-eco-espray/ .
